Last 10 December, the European Heritage Label (EHL) Bureau has announced the selection of ten groundbreaking projects that will receive financial support to promote collaboration, outreach, and sustainability among Europe’s most significant heritage sites.
Strengthening Connections Across Europe’s Cultural Heritage
Heritage sites bearing the prestigious European Heritage Label are symbols of Europe’s shared history and cultural diversity. To date, 67 sites—including archaeological landmarks, natural wonders, places of remembrance, and centers of intangible heritage—have been recognized for their symbolic importance in European culture.
For the first time, a dedicated funding initiative has been launched to further empower these sites. With a budget of €300,000, the inaugural Call for Projects issued in July 2024 will fund ten selected initiatives that aim to foster collaboration among EHL sites and amplify their role in promoting European values. Each project involves partnerships between multiple EHL locations, paving the way for innovative practices and greater community engagement.
Driving Change Through Four Key Priorities
The funded projects will focus on four major themes, reflecting the EU's commitment to making cultural heritage accessible, relevant, and sustainable:
- Youth Engagement: Encouraging younger generations to connect with and celebrate Europe’s cultural heritage.
- Digital Innovation: Leveraging technology to improve accessibility, audience engagement, and storytelling.
- Climate Action and Sustainability: Integrating green practices and aligning with the European Green Deal to protect heritage for future generations.
- European Citizenship: Promoting cultural exchange and fostering a stronger sense of European identity.
A Step Forward for Cultural Collaboration
Vincent Curie, Director of the EHL Bureau, emphasized the significance of this initiative:
These projects are a testament to the EU’s dedication to strengthening the ties that connect European citizens to their shared heritage. By focusing on collaboration, digital engagement, and sustainability, we ensure that our cultural legacy continues to inspire and unite future generations.
Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture, and Sport, also highlighted the importance of empowering heritage sites to engage wider audiences:
The European Heritage Label celebrates our cultural richness and diversity. By supporting these projects, we are investing in innovation, youth involvement, and environmental responsibility, advancing the goals of Creative Europe and ensuring that our heritage remains a vibrant part of our identity.
These initiatives mark a milestone in enhancing the visibility and impact of EHL sites. By fostering collaboration and storytelling within a pan-European context, they bring to life the shared cultural narrative that defines Europe. The projects, set to launch in early 2025, will contribute to deeper community connections and the preservation of Europe’s cultural legacy.
